RE: Jabber Jaws II (let's try it again)
A comment about the lack of younguns in the AMA. The original gang of members were the guys who grew up in an era when building a model airplane was the "neatest thing" a kid could do, competition was icing on the cake. Todays' situation is much different and for a variety of reasons trying to avtively recruit the youngsters to the AMA is a waste of time. In todays' world, a lot of guys aren't in any kind of personal, financial or intellectual state to take this hobby on. I have met many 30+ year olds who are now just finding the time and the interest [after years of playing NINTENDO] to get into our sport. Model aviation is no secret to anyone, everyone knows about it, it is either attractive enough to fly on its' own merits, or it isn't. It would be interesting to see what would happen if you could hand out a $500 complete RTF trainer system to let's say, one thousand 12 year olds, on a first come, first serve basis, just to see what impact that would have on membership over the next 10 years. I'm willing to bet only about 50 or less would have stuck with it and paid the $580 dues on the $500 bet. Most of the freebee RTFs would end up getting sold and converted into RC car gear, or video game stuff.
