Wecky, that sounds like an antenna problem. I would first take the controller apart and ensure that the antenna is wired securely.(On page 16 there are instuctions for taking apart the controller.) If that is securely attached, then you would have to take the plane apart, and check the connections there. You also said it was fairly new, you could bypass all of these steps and try to return it.
