RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
This ugly, difficult to find plane lands and glides well, note the ailerons and up elevator. The ailerons slow the flight considerably compared to the straight monoplane. nose has been trimmed so it hits wheels first more when coming in to land, and wheels are inset. Pin axles and tail pin have been trimmed short. Still no rolling takeoff; close, but then I'm trying to liftoff from a dirt road, and also nearing the end of my second set of alkaline batteries. This plane has great characteristics, but as I saw in my earlier attempts to add major wing area to the biplane, it is a little unstable, dipping a bit much when turning to one side, whereas to the other side I get a nice, controlled bank. This may have been because one motor is slightly ahead of the other. Next motor placement I do, I'll make up a jig to pre-align them ( I gorilla glue them).
This setup is still easily flyable even with the one side dipping, whereas the earlier large wing additions had made that setup uncontrollable in any turn.
What I need to accomplish next is, get rid of that dipping to the one side. Thinking I could add surfaces that will stabilize the turn if possible, so that at the point in the bank when it loses lift and starts to dip, a flat surface will come into play there to oppose the dip, buy a little time to keep the wingtip up more through the turn.
This plane can be stabilized easily at a given altitude, it descends gently at low throttle for great landings, and climbs pretty immediately when you open it up. I'm excited to try it in a larger area. Still, It's a just a few mph too fast, maybe 2/3 the speed of the standard mono mod, maybe 1/3 faster than when it was a biplane. 1/4 faster would be good.
I'm having alot of fun with this plane, the pressure is off as I was lucky enough to locate and purchase three more AA's, one each of a, b and c radio types. AA budget now expended.
When I finally get rolling takeoff I'll post an .mpg somewhere and link to it.
Personally I really enjoy all the pics here and will definitely visit any links to vid's of flights. Fun to watch these little planes fly. I would like to see a ribbon mod flight.
