My unsealed Pb 12V 4.5Ah batteries would also do this - plus I could see the electrolyte bubbling. I was using a 2/6 amp car battery charger and determined this was far too high of a rate.

I now maintain all my Pb batteries via one of those Deltran Battery Tenders. Simply plug it in and forget it until it's time to fly.
