There should be no problem with sailing the boat in salt water as long as the normal precaution of removing the salt from the boat is done. Preventing salt from entering the boat is a very good idea, at least as much as possible. Protecting the electronic and metal parts of the boat is the important part.
As to sailing on the 'open seas', it just depends on the state of the sea, weather, etc. Small boats sail better in 'small' seas, right? Force 12 winds and 3 meter waves are not usually very good for small boats! - lol
