mulletman, that oil should work. Ideally what you need is some form of oil on it that won't dry so the dirt particles will stick to the filter better. You could probably use WD40 or some other spray lube also.

Bowlmaster14, it sounds like it is in between shifts. The rpm's are not high enough to full engage second gear. You could adjust the second gear engagement point for either an early shift or a late shift it depends on when you want it to shift.
I also recomend a failsafe. They are not that expensive and will help prevent run aways.
