If you are planning on staying in the hobby you may want to look into some of the affordable computer radios on the market. Futaba and JR make great 4 and 6 channels. That way if you want to have just one radio for several models, or with the six channel if you want to add flaps, or retracts to a plane later on. You would never have to switch radios. I am very much like you in the respect it took me several years to get flying, and I am still learning. I build my own planes, and it took me 4 to get it right. I started out with a Laser 4, and also an Airtronics vg400, I decided to switch to the Futaba 4ex for my two trainers. It makes it easeir to only have to bring one radio and one frequency to the field, if you have multiple models. Just my two cents, good luck with the build.
