This seems to be the problem. I keep reading about how evil it is, but then the discussions just stop. Never any concrete examples of what is so bad.

One nice thing about the debit card is that you get 1% cash back. That in effect lowers my state sales tax by 1% every time I use it. On big purchases that adds up.
