I learnt to fly with no physical instruction at all ! All I did was buy a half decent simulator and practiced for about 3 months. Then bought a cheap electric park fly and practiced on that then moved on to larger electrics and so on. I was on my local clubs waiting list for 2 years so had no real choice.

I now have several large scale planes and helicopters. And have only had one major crash in 5 years. So it can be done without training, but I would also reccomend joining a club and getting help though.
