I am using the stock gear. Drilled 1/4 holes for the bolts. Epoxied hardwood blocks and tapped them for the nylon bolts.

Yes, they are meant to sheer under stress and impact and save the fuselage. I've had them work as advertised with no damage to the plane. Was back flying 5 minutes later.
