I found the problem...

In case this happens to anyone else, the problem seemed to be where the display flex circuit connects to the main circuit board. I re-seated the circuit into its 'connector' and gave the radio extensive bench testing. Satisfied that everything was working OK, I field tested the radio yesterday... no problems...

I'll emphasize that the rf portion of the radio always worked, though I didn't trust it (with no display, I wasn't sure what the problem could have been).

I'm just writing this in case anyone else happens to have the same problem...
