My thought on that was making the canopy removable by mounting it on a base with a hook in front and a single screw in back. One screw to pop the cowl and you have access to your top hatch. With a very slight weight penalty. Top access is nicer than bottom access in my opinion, atleast you don't have to flip the plane to inspect or work inside the bay.
