Default RE: HOW DO I MODIFY electric motor

Hi,

First of all… this is the forum for “Engine” conversions (they burn fuel) Not the “Motor” conversion (electric) forum.

But to answer your question…

You can not just remove windings from a motor. As you remove the windings, you cause the motor to draw more amps. Since it’s drawing more amps… the relatively thin wire can not support the current. This is why your motor burnt out.

If you want to rewind a motor… pull all the windings off… but be careful to count them as you do this, and take note on what way they are wrapped around the armature. Then rewrap it with heavier wire. There is no way to tell you what size to go up to… but a good rule of thumb is, “you want to fill the armature.” One other trick you can use is to use thinner wire, but wrap two or three strands at the same time. This will allow you higher current, and it gives a slightly better magnetic saturation for more torque. But if you are sloppy with a “Double” or “Triple” wind… the potential performance gain will be lost.

Look on the brushless motor forum… they will help you with winding technique.

Good luck
