if you do I would put the shim on the back side of the crank, that way the crank is not turning on the shim as the prop pull's on the crank (in fact it would be best to have the shim behind the rear bearing),, I would leave a good .015" or .020" of back-lash, there is a reason why they leave so much back-lash..
