It sounds like the high-speed and low-speed needles just aren't 'balanced'. One will affect the other. "Backfiring" is usually a sign of a too-rich low-speed setting. It could also be caused by too much fuel pressure at low throttle. Your engine's having the problem because it just has too much fuel coming into it at low throttle settings.
