RE: gas engine newbie need help
To get a motor started. I choke a motor only until I get fuel on my finger from the carb (how many tugs will depend on where in the fuel line the fuel was). The motor will often give a cough when the fuel reaches it. Once I have fuel in the carb (as evidenced by the fuel on my finger from covering the carb intake) I give the motor a swift crank or two and she will come to life. If after a few swift cranks it does not I will normally choak it for one pull and then try cranking it again. Failing that there is likely another issue to investigate.
I shudder when I hear about "oil mix" packets. It is often junk oil at incorrect mix ratios for gas boating. I HIGHLY recommend running 8zo of Synthetic or synthetic blend two stroke oil per gallon of fuel.
Most hobby stores (and premix packets) cater to RC planes and planes use a fraction of the oil we run.
