Default RE: PCM fail safe settings

Didn't we start off with discussion what control positions to use for the failsafe position? I still think neutral and low idle is best.

1. You have no idea what orientation the plane will be at when failsafe engages, hence anything other than neutral is likely to make things worse if you're not flat and level. Sure, going neutral may not help in all instances but for most situations it's not going to make it any worse than it is......and if control returns you'll be in a better position to take control.

2. Low idle will give you a chance to recover if control returns, deadsticking is just going to compound the glitch if you get control back. Low idle also minimises potential injury to anything that prop may hit and may save the engine if it does crash.

If you have PCM, or any other system that provides failsafe, why not use it?

Anyone recall the details of the UK kid who died when a plane hit him. Sure there were numerous issues there but I recall the judge questioning why the failsafe functions on the PCM radio had not been used (and why 80% of those with failsafe do not know or do not program them).
