In my country the few crashes we have are caused by pilot error. A few years back when everybody thought that PCM receivers were the best and only right receivers to use, planes were crashing every once in a while due to radio lock-out. But now everyone is using PPM Dual Conversion or IPD receivers WITHOUT using the fail-safe function. So now we don't crash anymore. The fail safe funktion is actually the cause of most crashes, for whatever reason. In the end it all comes down to the pilot/builders experience. So, if you are unexperienced, go fly with the experienced people untill you know what you are dealing with.
