I had about 6x8 feet to work with. I also have a few wall patches to paint My first real hover came when I went out to my garage. By practicing in such a small delicate area the garage seemed like a gym. Another tip to try is see if you can set your corrections before you throttle up. I learned where the right stick needed to be for a fairly level take off and worked on setting it there before throttling up.
