Both are made with outstanding quality, especially the covering. I would dare say their covering quality rivals much more expensive kits from the like of BME or EF.
The hardware is another story. You could build and fly with it, I would replace as much of it as possible.
You are correct that the Edge comes a bit lighter than the Yak. There is a very good thread from Bonedoc on the Edge that covers all there is to know.
I would also consider the Lanier Extra 330 in this bunch. It's a question of taste, but it looks good and flies very well.
Main mods would be in reducing the number of servos in the wing to two, installing pull/pull on rudder and switching all horns to sturdier bolts.
It's true that these can use a larger engine, especially the Yak, but I have flown my Extra on a DA-50 and it's quite unlimited. flies out from hover with no problem. Weight is 17.5 lbs.

I am looking very hard at the Lanier 87" as a cheaper throw around plane.
Right now, I favor the Edge over the Yak just because it it looks like it comes in about 1/2 - 3/4 pounds less with the same wing area. Also, I think the Edge may be slightly more stable at lower speed at a heavier wing loading.
It will most likely be powered with a 60 to 80cc single cylinder and cheaper digital 56X5MG servos that I have on hand.
Anyone have any input that would confirm or deny my leaning toward the Lanier 87" Edge over the Lanier 87" Yak?
Thanks and Happy holidays all.
