To do a good looking carbon effect go to your local hardware store and get drywall tape. Get one with the lowest tack possible because you dont want it to be sticking to the body (and leaving glue) when you remove it.

If you buy one and it has a high tack (high glue) then try rubbing it off on something before applying it. Maybe rub it on wax paper...wet it with and scrub with a towel..etc

You want it to stick but not leave a residue when you done with it. Also when you apply it take it off in less than an hour after applying the tape. The less time on the body the less time the glue has to settle.
