Default FMS broke, and my printer too.

Do you have a current up to date wizz bang anti-virus package on your machine? Does it say everything is okay ?

If you have been infected by one of the numerous bugs of recent times then the following may not fix your problems.

This is the standard "dirty" windows 98 reinstall I have used more times then I can recall, on my machines, department machines and clients system.

(1) Make absolutely sure that your pc will boot from your windows 98 cd.
(2) If it can not boot from that cd then manually copy the folder called WIN98 from the CD onto your hard disk, leaving the directory called WIN98. (about 95mb).
(3) Now restart the PC and boot to a command prompt. I.e. you have C:> whatever and windows is not running.
(4) Change to the Windows directory, CD C:\WINDOWS
(5) Rename win.com to something silly, e.g. REN WIN.COM WIN.POO
(6) Now, if your PC does boot okay from your win98 cd then just restart the machine with the disk in the cd rom drive. If it does not boot from cd and you copied the WIN98 folder as per step 2 then just restart the PC and you will end up at a C:> prompt again. Change to the WIN98 directory CD C:\WIN98 and run SETUP.
(7) If you did (6) or the machine booted off the cd then just follow the bouncing ball. Windows setup will ask you where to install windows and it will possibly default to WINDOWS.000 make sure you select or type in C:\WINDOWS.
(8) When all the Bill Gates magic finishes then your system may be happy again. It WILL retain all it's normal settings and none of your user files should be lost during this process.

If this does not fix things then we'll need to look a little deeper!

Can you give me a run down of the hardware etc that you are using. Processor, ram etc etc.. Feel free to PM or email me.

Regards,

Ingmar
