I asked and was told that it is not necessary. I was just told to fuel proof the exposed wood around the can.
I am planning to use this aluminum tape I have, just above and below the can. I think it's used for appliance repairs or something... There must be a bunch of automotive product that can be used to shield and dissipate heat...
There is going to be quite a draft flowing around that can, coming in through the cowl opening and going towards the exit hatch...
I have no idea how much the can actually heats on the outside... I suspect the header gets quite hot.
