Default RE: Best 100c class engine?

ORIGINAL: RTK

Throwing in my 2 cents. I have really never had a bad engine from any of the top manufacturers. There are many good 100cc class engines, at this time it is really hard not to choose the BME 115. Lighter than the rest and more power to boot. Balancing in not a problem if proper location of components are used. It will spin a Mejz 28x10 at 6800 give or take on stock mufflers once run in.
This is one of the most sensible answers I've read in a thread of this type. Often these threads dissolve into love fests and bash fests...usually DA vs 3W and more recently BME.

For what it's worth...I agree that they're all great motors. Some may have a little more power (which you may or may not need depending on altitude, weight of airframe, flying style, etc.) while others may have a nearly unimpeachable service record..each has a perceived strength. So here's my dorky recommendation: If you are an experienced GS gasser then you likely already have a preference...so I'm guessing that you are still testing the waters...assuming this is true, I'll recommend using the brand of engine that the most trusted and experienced flyers at your club use. My reasoning is that if you have difficulties or questions - and these questions will come up - you will have knowledgable answers to your questions and concerns. So, If your field has a bunch of 3W devotees, and they are not having trouble with those engines...then get a 3W...same for BME or DA.

From my experience, the DA-100 and 150 engines are very reliable (as are most others) and offer really impressive service (cheap and fast service.) For instance, when I bought my second DA-100, I got it used from a nice kid in Colorado. Well, the brown shirt brigade (UPS) must have used a catapult to move the box from Co to Ca because the engine arrived in a box that was beat-up bad. It must have been dropped from at least waist-high. The prop adapter and all the prop bolts were bent...it was really something. So, dejectedly, I packed it up and sent it off to DA. They fixed everything, "mic'd" the crankshaft, and test ran the engine...recording the RPMs and checking the carb. They also gave me the complete history of the engine (it is a very low serial number engine and was sent in for new jugs and bearings 2 years ago.) My engine was given a clean bill of health and they charged me $78.00 including shipping. I was without my engine for about 10 days total including UPS shipping. I couldn't be happier. Others may do the same, and obviously I am not privy to every sevice call on every engine...but I have not heard of another manufacturer or importer which routinely offers this kind of service to the layman.

To me this is very valuable. Does a BME 115 have more power? Yes... Do some of the 3W's have handsome anodized jugs? Yes... Does the ZDZ....well, you get the idea.

DA also generously sponsors contests either directly (Tucson Shootout) or by donating prizes at some IMAC events (at least some of the ones I've been to.) I value this too. In fairness, I have also seen 3W prizes as well from Bobby @ Cactus Aviation...in fact I won a nice gift certificate from them.

Anyway, these are all great engines...I guess it's a BMW vs Lexus vs Mercedes question.

Whichever you choose...good luck!

Robert
