Measure from the leading edge of the wing (closest to the fuselage) to the trailing edge. Divide this figure by 3. Use this figure and measure that distance back from the leading edge (closest to the fuselage) to the trailng edge. This will be a good starting point.
Why should he have to do this??

I have the seagull spacewalker II 40 and can't get the C.G. right. the manual says 7.5 to 8 centimeters from the leading edge of the wing.
He's got the measurements that the instrution manual calls for. He should use those as the starting point for setting the CG. You method works ok if the CG range isn't known, but since he knows where it's supposed to be set he should use that measurement
