Default Differences in engines?

I would say the decision would be based more on available funds than on experience. A BB engine is far superior to a bushing engine, they are not any harder to tune. and in 40+ years of flying without ever using "after run" oil I have only changed the bearings in one engine (and it was a simple task if you're mechanically inclined).
So if, for example, you were looking at an OS LA40, at $58, I would suggest spending an extra $17 and getting the Thunder Tiger Pro 40BB at $75. Or better yet, spring another $2 and get the TT Pro 46 BB (All are Tower Prices).
