Default 20 year old L-4 Cub Goldberg Rebuild... What a Job!

I finally got her home and saved from the Wood Stove! Our Club was having there annual yearly meeting Last night, when our Club Vice gave me his old bird. While my wife and I were about to go and get the plane from his basement... we started with the "Red Neck" Jokes... Like, “You know you're a Red Neck, when you use Box Tape to Patch your Glow Planes." [sm=lol.gif]

Hmm, I was wondering why Dan gave me a funny look. When I got the L-4, it was very beat and rusted up. Had Mono Patches and Box Tape all over her. But still, I was very happy to be able to have it. The Club has faith in me, that I can rebuild her... this is my first real big project, I'm glad everyone has faith in me. I'll just have to take it one step at a time.

From what I can tell, the wood is not rotted. Dan originally had a 90 fs in it for a motor. I know the kit said a 90 would be good, he gave me the original directions with the plane, but the kit also stated I could use a 40ts. [sm=72_72.gif] One is overpowering, and the other is under powering it. Hmmm, I'm going to go with a 60... not sure if I want the ts or fs Engine?

The whole kit was covered in Cloth dope. I could have easily poked a hole in the fabric if I wasn't careful... it was so old, the Covering was very brittle. The Left wing was smashed when he hit the fence with it, and the Fuselage was bowed and cracked. One of the brackets, or frame members near the tail was cracked. The Leading Edge was smacked in a few places. Under the plane some fuel got in through the covering on the bottom near the firewall. But that's not a problem; I'll get the fuel out of the wood with Rubbing Alcohol and a clean Rag.

Anyone who has any tips or tricks, feel free to share, I want to make Dan Proud of me. I told him that I was going to re-do the Cub in Captured Luftwaffe Markings. He had no problem with that. I have NEVER seen a Captured Cub in the R/C Community. Let me be the first!

Sorry about the Messy Floor.[sm=red_smile.gif]

My next step is to take out the pins in the CA Hinges, and start stripping away the old cloth. I'm wearing a Dust Mask while I do this... very dusty.

Hey guys, Dan also gave me 3 of these Motors... they are very old and parts for them are expensive. All 3 were seized, and I got the two shown here rebuilt and working. Anyone know what type and size they are? Answer in the next Post. Hmmm, just what will I put them in is the question?
