Default RE: 20 year old L-4 Cub Goldberg Rebuild... What a Job!

Yes, it is a Labor of Love, and no... those engines a too small for the plane. I'll give you all a few hints, the engines were made in the early or mid 60's and went out of business or was bought out in the 70's. Both are 40 ts but have the power size in Metric, engraved on the side of the engines along with the name. I have not researched these engines quite yet, I might be slightly off on the dates a bit.

Oh yea, I almost forgot... if you needed any parts for these engines, expect to pay dearly for them. Dan said the parts that he needed for one was kind of out of his reach. He needed carb parts, or now I do. I have the third engine completely apart. I'm waiting to get a new torch so I can heat up some parts to get the rear hub and bearings out.

The engines came with the mufflers, and the mufflers were completely hollow. You can't take the mufflers completely apart because they are rivoted, but you can remove them from the engine and use a 17 year old OS 40ts muffler on it.

Goldberg came out with the L-4 kit about 20 years ago. I don't know about anyone else, but I would rather rebuild then just go out and buy a full kit. I never built a large kit, and the the Club feels that I should start with rebuilds first... just to get an idea what I'm about to get in. I'm one of those who learn alot by taking things apart. Plus I'm preserving the talent that was done 20 years ago from the original builder, minus the Paint job and extra details.

The Luftwaffe Cub was painted in a Silver Dope and Blue Cub Lightning Stripe. Denmark had a whole fleet of Cubs when the Germany invaded Denmark.

Germany kept the Danish colors, and added the black letter markings and added the Iron Crosses and the Swa. I have the Registration numbers of all that were captured. J-2's and 3's.

I don't plan on just building ARF's for the rest of my life. The "Old Timers" have been brain washing me! [:@] Plus, the only way I can have the aircraft I want in the future is to build them from scratch, or from a kit. There are too many P-51's,P-47's, F4-u's and Spits out there. I want something different in my hanger, except for the J-3 Cubs because I used to fly one nearly on a daily basis in the 80's. I always tell other pilots to get rid of there Cessna 150's and 152's and get a real work horse. The J-3 was used for a lot of jobs through the years. Just a remarkable plane all the way around.
