We have not heard of issues w/ the Realtek AC97.

Some people have solved the problem by updating the sound card driver. This approach might work in your case.

Thanks Michael for your help. Have turned off the variometer that stopped the beeping. Also had to turn down the hardware acceleration two notches to get the engine noise sounding ok. Seems to have been fixed now.
