I start my Saito and O.S. four strokes using the same procedure as you mentioned.
With the glow driver disconnected and the throttle open I plug the exhaust and turn the engine clockwise four to five turns (until when turned counter clockwise the engine sound very wet) then with the driver connected and throttle at idle using only my fingers turn the spinner back wards against the compression
(snapping motion starting about 1/2 turn off the compression) this results in the engine back firing and going very rapidly through the compression in the foreword direction.
Both engines start the first time in most instances.
