RE: 1/12 ME-109E & P-51 Mustang
I started building my HOB P47 this past Christmas and it's all done except for the final coats of dope (too cold in PA now to do the finish work in my garage / workshop). Couple of suggestions:
Skip the gear and the landing blocks, unless you're flying off a paved runway. The wheels won't work on anything but a putting green and you don't need the extra weight of retracts and retract servos. An ounce or two at this scale makes a HUGE difference in flight performance.
Add diehedral braces at the leading and trailing edges in addition to the one at the main spar. Even with the fiberglass reinforcing, the OOTB design for joining the wing halves won't sustain more than a couple of rough landings.
Consider tossing the plastic turtle deck and using 1/16" balsa sheeting instead. (but cutout and save the canopy!) Using balsa lets you putty and sand and feather, whereas plastic is less forgiving if your build dimensions are slightly off.
Servo, battery, and engine placement is both art and engineering. As Bruce said, build ALL of the components, assemble the pieces using pins and/or small bits of tape, then lay in your electronics and pushrods and control horns to see how it balances. I'll lay stuff on the outside of the plane or wing then move them around to get a feel for where they need to go.
I've got a Norvel .074 in the nose of my P47 and had to install the elevator / throttle servos in the turtledeck BEHIND the canopy to make it balance properly. With a .10 or .15 up front you're likely to find that you HAVE to put your servos in the tail. Don't forget that you'll have more covering and paint behind the CG than in front, so leave yourself a bit nose heavy and make sure you can move your battery around to fine tune the CG before you toss her the first time.
Keep on posting pics!
