Nail polish remover will not be a good substitute, it has other additives. I have used denatured alcohol and acetone. I prefer the latter, IMO it mixs more evenly especially if you are using faster drying epoxy.

If possible stay away from 5 mins epoxy. Adding acetone does not add that much time before it cures.
