Locking the diff is not necessary to start, but nice to have eventually.
the sprint 2 drift is a good call, but good luck trying to find one instock. I had the hardest time finding one.
A great alternative to the sprint2, if you cant find one is the Himoto Nascada RTR. They are very cheap, and are RTR. Do a search here under drifting for it, or go to ebay.
Either way.....the really only thing you need to start drifting is a set of the drift tires or ABS. The sprint2 Drift will come with them, but if you go with another RTR, like the Nascada, you can purchase a set of ABS tires to mount on a set of rims for $6 (
