Shipping Problem.
After accepting an offer, and payment for my motor, I was requested to ship the motor via Priority Mail. I was skeptical of this method as I have never used it in the past, and always used UPS to ship items I sold. I agreed and requested the $8.10 shipping cost added to the selling price of the motor.
The buyer sent the amount to my Paypal Account, and I proceeded to ship the item via USPS "Priority Mail".
I went to the post office and packaged the motor onsight, and paid the $8.10 fee, addressed the box and handed it to the postal employee.
Thinking everything was fine I emailed the buyer that I had shipped the item USPS as he had requested, and he should recieve his item in about three business days.
A week went by and I recieved an email from the buyer wanting to know where his motor was. Confused I contacted him and told him I mailed it as he requested, and give it some time. I recieved another email after two weeks and he still hasnt recieved the item.
The post office has found the transaction in their records documenting my having shipped the item however the item has not reached its destination as of this date.
The post office tells me the item has to be missing 30 days to file a non delivery/reciept of parcel complaint so my question is this.
Since I shipped the item in the manner requested by the buyer, when does my responsibility end with regard to fulfilling the contract? I am willing to reimburse the buyer if after the 30 days has transpired and the search for the item in the postal system turns up negative, however I feel that since I followed his request to ship USPS instead of the way I wanted to ship (UPS), I have fulfilled my obligation. I have all of the correspondence with regard to this transaction including my reservations of sending anything in the USPS system, but as stated before I would reimburse the cost to the buyer if the item can not be found by the POSTAL SERVICE.
What do you think about this dilema?
