That's absolutely wrong, throttle trim should be half way during flight.....
Regardless of whether it's wrong or right, it has reduced the sensitivity of the throw of the throttle stick, and reduced the top end values of the throttle itself, thus making the radio, overall, easier to handle for a beginner.

In the past few days I have played with the throttle trim more and more, bringing it up a little at a time, so as to give myself more lift as I felt myself getting more comfortable with the controls. Having the throttle trim down prevented me from launching the bird into the ceiling or worse while learning.

If people have issues with any one suggestion on this thread, the simple though is, 'If it doesn't help you, don't do it.' As beginners people should realize that there is much to be learned, and anything that makes your life easier is a helper. If it doesn't work for you, put it back to the way it was before you changed ANYTHING. (You did, for the record, document what the configuration was before you made changes, right?)
The purpose of keeping the trim level set to 50% is to arm the system. Once you go below that 50% mark you are not armed and when flying you will have no control of the tail when the main stick is all the way down.

An example of this would be a counter rotation landing.
