On the subject of photo fields again. I followed the FAQ directions and well...can't get any of it to work. The panorama works fine in G3, in FS One I get a white world and no Icon files are rendered in the UI when selecting a field.
I know this isn't supported so if anyone else is trying to setup their own field I'd love to collaborate some on this.
Hi Shakes
It has been some time since the FAQ came out and I could actually experiment a bit with the pano fields. Well, I had the same problem as you with the result being a white world, although I tried to save my images down with 24-bit colour depth. I'm not saying that this is the definitive way, but the only way to get it to work properly was to save the images down as .dds files. There is a plugin available at [link=http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=4816]http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=4816[/link] which enables Gimp to read and save .dds files. When saving, make sure you select DXT1 as the compression and leave all other options as default and unticked, else your white world will be back.
I've made my first successful pano of our little airfield. There is still some cleanup work to do higher up in the sky and close to the tripod, but it looks very good in FS One so far. I do see a problem so far as the perspective of the aircraft and the scenery does not corelate properly when the aircraft moves away from the viewer - the aircraft gets smaller too quickly relative to the position on the scenery where I see it.
I first thought it had something to do with the focal length of the lens with which I took the panorama (46mm in this case), but this can't be a problem if the end result has a width of 8192 and height of 4096. All that I can think of now is that the horizon of my panorama is below (or above?) the horizontal center line of the panorama. I made sure that my camera was 6 feet from the ground.
I will shift the horizon around a bit to see what effect it has in the sim.
