Yes, the dds files are "easier" on the hardware with respect to video memory and time reading off disk. If you have plenty of video RAM, then the tga files are the best. I can notice a small visual improvement w/ tga files over dds files. The improvement is only noticed when zooming in a lot and when viewing across tiles when the sim runs.
