Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone has been able to run FSOne on a laptop that is using the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950?
John
FSOne,
I know the GMA 950 is not mentioned in the system requirements, but I'm interested in your thoughts on the subject. The laptop would be running a Core 2 duo processor with 2GB memory and 256 MB shared video memory. NOTE: I am not looking for a guarantee, just some insight into possible risks with the integrated video setup.
Regards,
John
John -- At this time, we have not tested FS One with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator and Intel graphics cards are not currently supported. FS One, like most other graphics-intensive applications, requires graphics "hardware acceleration". The graphics driver for most NVIDIA and ATI cards includes support for OpenGL hardware acceleration. I am not aware of such support for Intel graphics cards (although it may exist). If the driver for the Intel graphics card included full OpenGL support, including ARB support for many OpenGL supplemental functions, it is possible that the card may be able to run FS One.
However, the other factor to consider is whether the Intel graphics card has comparable performance to ATI and NVIDIA cards. Modern ATI and NVIDIA cards are extremely powerful and many actually have more compute power than a supercomputer of the 1980's. If the Intel graphics card lacks similar performance to the "approved" ATI and NVIDIA cards, it will likely run too slow to be effective.
Also, in most cases, a graphic card that uses shared video memory is significantly slower than a card with integral video memory, although we have seen ATI and NVIDIA cards that use shared video memory that provide reasonable graphics speed. Predicting graphics performance is difficult, since it actually is a combination of many factors, including type of graphics chip, type of video memory, amount of video memory, graphics bus type/speed, front side bus (FSB) speed, CPU speed, amount of motherboard memory, and also the graphics driver software, just to name a few.
So, unfortuately, I really cannot say if the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 would work with FS One. I can say, however, that many people have used laptops with ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards and have been happy with the perfromance. I hope this additional info is helpful.
