I designed my plane on 3D max. The software works fine. It is a lot easier to use that the solid works and the cost is far less. That said it does not have near the capability as something like solid works or inventor. I am currently learning inventor. Being able to design in 3D and building the parts in a 3D structure is the best way to go. You know that every part is going to fit perfectly and the soft ware will tell you if you have interference with other parts in an assembly.
