RE: World Models Supersport40
Thanks for all the info guys ,It really helped me setup this model. I took her out for the first flight today ,it was a bit nose heavy, some weight behind the servo tray solved the problem.
I was assuming a long take off roll, so I had my flying buddy hold the tail while I cranked up the Ax to full throttle .With an 11x6 it revd up to approx 11600 rpms , have ran only two tanks through it .I guess it will increase in future flights as the engine loosens up. He let go off the tail and after a short run and a bit of up elevator it was airborne .I was a bit shaky at first because I was accustomed to the lumbering takeoffs of my Superstar 40 trainer , having flown that for over an year , the super sports is a totally new experience .46 Ax is an ideal match for this model , the speed and the sound put a smile on my face ,it was a bit windy 13mph but that didn’t seem to bother at all, the cg seemed right on the mark without any tendency to dive or climb on its own , tried a few imelmans, loops rolls figure 8s, all with good authority .After about 10 minutes it was time to land because I was flying at full throttle all this time , I pulled back to half throttle and circled the field to bleed the airspeed. On the final I pulled the stick all the way back but she showed little signs of slowing down as the throttle servo wasn’t setup properly for slow idle, pulling back the trim lever didn’t help much either. All it did was slow down the engine to fast idle .That caused me to panic because now the landing strip seemed too small for this hot bird ,and in the direction where I was landing there was tall grass right after the field, couldnt abort the approach for the fear of a dead stick close to the ground , tried to flare her several times to bleed off the excessive airspeed but then I didn’t want to stall her, this resulted in me flying over almost all the strip, the touchdown was quite hot ,in the last 10 ft or so of the strip As soon as she touched down she just hugged the ground and the grass acted like a speed barrier , there was no damage to the plane except a tiny tear in the covering near the right wingtip a little cello tape was all that was required .After the flight all I could do was to feel proud of the fact that i had successfully flown my first Lowwing model ,I know that would be a walk in the park for many of you guys .I am glad I chose this kit over the scale super chipmunk 46 .
