I believe that in most cases rudders are on the right (when not directly behind the prop) because they are more effective there for right turns typical in clockwise racing). If I was going to build a boat I'd try putting it right behind the prop. But off to the right from the back works fine. Supervee is proof. You may want to do some research on how far off to the side you go before drilling any holes.
