Default RE: What Motor?

I think 3D Flyer Kevin is asking a good question. Perhaps he did not word it correctly, though. I am brand new to electric flight, but not to R/C. I have flown glo planes for 11 years (I'm am 21yrs old now).

I was wondering the exact same thing as him a while back and would have asked the same question, but perhaps there is a better question who's answer also answers many other questions. The question is: How are electric motors rated? Coming from the glo world, I'm used to seeing a displacement rating; for example, it is easy to choose a glo engine for a kit that specifies it is for a .42-.46 model...or .91-1.2......electrics seem to be much different, though. Not all websites give the same specs on engines. And what do the numbers stand for when engines ARE classified (like the rimfire 22M-1000)....what does the 22M-1000 mean? is this a 400 size motor? etc etc. And how do you convert between inrunner to outrunner....with or without gearbox etc? And finally, what to look for when shopping for ESCs for the different engines.

The answer to these questions would solve the problems related to "which engine do I use?"

These are questions that I'm asking as well....so not to hijack this thread, but I think these answers would help 3D Flyer Kevin too.

Thanks all!
