Yes, definitely repair your trainer. Since you're learning on your own you'll have to learn to repair them.

I would recommend the Goldberg Tiger 2. I think it flys a little better than the 4-Star and I've flown both. You could get the ARF version, but consider getting the kit. It will greatly improve your building skills. Good luck!
