Default RE: E-Motor Mount for Pletti Xtra Outrunner

ORIGINAL: MHester

That is true....very true.

Mounting to the firewall works well, but the firewall has to be a solid brick wall. It works but best solution? Well, the best solution is.....who really knows yet, since there's nothing even close to standard about any of it. Hence why there 1001 different ways to mount it, and one that has a higher than normal risk of seperating the nose from the rest of the plane. I hate it when that happens...

Since we are discussing this, there was only 1 person that I know of that had any long term (full season) success nose mounting an outrunner without any back support. Now his plane began to structurally fail but he caught it before it tore the nose off. I think nose mounting will work only if you have a back support and only if you are using a full fuselage setup. Not a fuse with a composite nose grafted onto the front. Not enough strength with that set up. Like some others have posted, it seems there are really only 2 options: bolt motor directly to a firewall or use a mount with standoffs like the Esprit (Cambria) type mount. Mike alluded to the power and torque these motors have. Everyone who has seen one run for the first time is amazed at the power and can see why they would twist the nose right off a plane. Big outrunner + weak mounting = broken plane.
