It comes out the top. What exactly is getting stuck? Getting the main gear off the shaft can be pretty difficult I used a screwdriver to pry mine off while pulling the shaft from the top. Like chaseman sugggested, heating the main gear/shaft up with a hairdryer seem to help out as well. Good luck.
