correct, the 2n1 includes revo mixing so it cannot be used with HH gyros. if you have a 3n1 (or a 4n1), you can use that instead. if not, all you need is a pair of brushed esc's, like 2 pixie 10's or something. 2 small brushed esc's is more durable, cheaper, & lighter than a 3n1 anyways.

since you're in the process of upgrading, now would be a good time to consider upgrading to a brushless main. you could put the $$ for the brushed main esc towards a brushless main & esc instead. not trying to upsell you here, just wanted to make sure you to consider all your options.
