Cut new slots beside the old hinge slots and use the CA hinges. When you cut the slots for the CA hinges you only need the thickness of a #11 exacto blade. install your hinges and control surface and put two drops of THIN CA on each side of each hinge.

The CA hinges are stiffer than a properly glued pin type hinge but they are free enough that they don't cause any problems.
