OAKDALE , CA - What’s that you say, you did not make the Oakdale contest! Shame on you. You want to know how it went but are afraid to ask? Well look no further, just read on. Before we get into the contest details let's not forget the three people who worked hard to make this an enjoyable weekend for all the flyers; Dick Beldon (CD), Ron Davies (who provided the food and drink) and Luke Peng who did the scoring for us. Thank you from all of us for a job well done. Arriving early on Saturday, the sun was out and the winds were light (at 8am!), eventually the wind were clocked at 20mph with temperatures in the 80's. The wind was right down the runway so the only real issue was centering the maneuvers. Jim Brown, Jerry Budd, Chris Atwood, Mike Greear, Jim and Matt Kimbro and Ralph DePalma were in attendance from Southern California. Thanks for coming up guys. In FAI, Atwood, Kimbro, Koopowitz, Wong and Covey were all walking around telling others of their latest trim changes and how much it helped how the plane flew. Atwood took the prize here for his CPLR 'wing' just aft of the canopy. After round 1, Covey was in the lead with Atwood taking second. Round 2 Atwood won with stellar flying as he was some 80 points in front that round! Covey was second, Kimbro third. Round 3 had yet another winner as Kimbro won that round. After this, Covey performed with few flaws winning all remaining rounds. Kimbro and Atwood were 3 points apart going into round 6! (Don won the round 6 and took 2nd). The Masters class was set with Jerry Budd and Chris Atwood squaring off for top honors but Speights, Carter and DePalma wanted to have a ‘say-so’ in the results. Chris took round 1, but Jon Carter took 2nd place! Was Jon here to stay? Was the Sheriff back in town? Round 2 gave us the answer! In a word, “No”, Jon flew zero maneuvers in rounds 2-3-4 to drop way back in the standings. Chris won round 2 and 3 and Jerry won round 4. Chris won 5 and 6, winning the contest, with Jerry Budd taking 2nd and Roy Speights taking 3rd. There were three contestants in Advanced, with Gary Fontaine taking top honors with a score of 4000. Intermediate was interesting, with 6 contestants. Matt Kimbro gave the other pilots pattern lessons as he won all rounds. Scott MacAfee was easily in 2nd place and Mike Miller was easily in 3rd. Dave Wick, Ron Davies and Chris Beldon better start practicing or it will be a long year. Mike Greear and Dave MacAfee were the only two in Sportsman, with Mike taking all rounds.
