You might be on the right track, but only if you:

1. Don't call them 'nitro engines' because this is a term incorrectly used by stupid 'newbies' who don't know better, mostly in R/C cars, because it sounds more 'explosive' than the correct term - glow engines, or methanol engines.
These engines can all run well without any nitromethane whatsoever in the fuel, but not even for one second if the fuel doesn't include a fair amount of methanol, on which the plug's continued glow depends, due to methanol's catalytic reaction with the platinum in its coil.
