Actually brushless motors are like AC motors which is why we need a speed controller. The speed controller of a brushed motor simply supplies variable DC voltage/current. You can run a brushed motor on a DC power supply just as easily as from an ESC. The brushless controllers have to supply alternating voltage/current in different phases through the coils to oppose the magnets that are on the armature.
